BOOK REVIEWS

In A World Gone Mad
reviewed byVerna Colliver, library committee

A new addition to the church library is In a World Gone Mad by Amy Hill Hearth and Norman and Amalie Petranker Salsitz.

“The end justifies the means” is a cliché that we glibly pronounce without really considering its implications. Perhaps we use the rationale more often than we realize, and we may also recognize the essential flaw in the argument. For the Holocaust survivors in Amy Hill Hearth’s story the “end” is literally their survival under the Nazi persecution of the Jews in World War II. Ask yourself this question:  Would I lie, cheat or steal in order to protect a loved one or myself? Is what is normally considered immoral, unethical or illegal ever justified?

Norman and Amalie Petranker Salsitz face this question and their response is a compelling story of courage in the midst of fear and suffering. Survival requires the agonizing choice to live a lie. It is also an opportunity for Hearth, the writer, to face the reality not only of the horrors perpetrated by the Nazis but also the complicity of the German people and the rest of the world who might have done more to stop the madness.

While there have been many books, plays and movies about the Holocaust, the need to tell and retell the story cannot be denied. One of the survivors the author meets in her research for the book worries about what will happen when all the survivors have died?  “Who will tell the story when they are gone?”

The stories have been told and we need to read them and heed the lesson, “Never again.” Check out In a World Gone Mad from the library.
